Do you have rodents?  The signs of rodents are pretty obvious.  You may notice small droppings around the area where the rodents come and go.  For rats the droppings are about the size of a rice grain and for mice they are substantially smaller.  If you have food stored in a back room there may be obvious signs that something has been into the packages.  Rats and mice will chew right into dry goods if they find them.  You may hear scratching and scurrying in the walls or up in your attic.

Termites also leave obvious calling cards.  They consume the wood grain of your home’s foundation, so what you will see are mounds of what looks like fine sawdust.  If you can see inside an area where you think there may be termites, you will see trails through the back of the wood where the termites have bored their way through the wood.

Possums may look cute but they can cause a lot of problems.  If you have possums living in your home you will definitely know about it.  They are very noisy at night and can keep your whole family up all night long.  Possums cause unbearable odours that can be difficult to live with.  If one dies in your ceiling the smell can be horrible.  They may use the insulation in your ceiling to make a nest which decreases the effectiveness of the insulation and cause a fire hazard.  A possum’s urine can cause stains that cannot be easily removed.  They can also cause dogs to bark all night long which can make it difficult for your family to sleep at night.  Listen for noises in your ceiling and look for chew holes around the area where they may be living.
