Your employees are the backbone of your business. If you think about it, you can’t really succeed without the right staff. Whether they’re bringing in new business or working in the background, they have a large impact on the bottom line.
It’s not that hard to find good staff members, especially if you have the right vetting system. But finding excellent employees is a whole other story. And when you find them, you want to keep them. So, how do you stop these people from moving on?
Many businesses these days don’t offer the benefits they used to. Less and less companies are offering medical aid or retirement funds. So, having those would be a big plus for many employees. But having unique benefits that they won’t often find elsewhere could be a huge drawcard. Flexible working hours is one example and the ability to work remotely is another.
Open and honest communication
If your best employees are unhappy you should want them to feel like they can talk to you about it. That way you can adjust to their needs and encourage them to stay with the company. Having an open door policy goes a long way in this regard. If you give your staff members a safe place to voice their concerns and are open to listening to them, you’ll know exactly what you need to do to prevent them from seeking out greener pastures.
Employees need to feel as though they can grow with the company. If there’s no chance of moving up the ranks or improving on their skillset, they may want to go somewhere where the opportunities are greater. Providing staff training and supporting further education (there are loads of on-line courses to help with this) will make your employees feel as though they are being encouraged to grow.
Offering incentives for things like reaching sales targets and bringing in new business will motivate your workforce as well as make them feel appreciated. It doesn’t have to be money, it could be a fully-paid weekend away or extra leave days.
Retaining staff is important and you need to make sure that your best employees are happy. Constant staff turnover is bad for morale and could discourage teamwork. So, take a moment to think about these suggestions and decide whether they could be beneficial to your business.
