How to have fun without drinking

So, you want to take a break from drinking. Or you’re looking out for your health. Or maybe you’ve just never really enjoyed it all that much. But, of course, you still want to go out and be social. The thing is, alcohol is such a big part of going out when you’re an adult.

So, how do you party without having a drink or seven? Well, it’s not as hard as you’d think.

Avoid going out “just for a drink”

Bars are pretty awful places for sober people. Firstly, there’s not much on the menu for you to consume. You can only have so many soft drinks before you start to feel a sugar crash coming on. At the beginning of the night the conversation may be enough to keep you interested, but after everyone else has had a few, you’ll feel like you’re on a whole other level. Go to places where you can enjoy the menu too, like a restaurant you’ve been dying to try.

Keep your energy levels up

Going dancing is a great way to party while still being sober. The big drawcard is that drinking isn’t the main focus, so it won’t be so you won’t end up feeling left out. The thing is, you’ve got to keep your energy levels up so you can keep moving until either the party ends or the sun comes up. Instead of tequila, have one or two energy drinks to keep you going. And lots of water, of course. If you get tired, you’ll probably just want to go home while your friends are still having the night of their life.

Don’t draw attention to your sobriety

Yes, we’re all adults and are therefore supposed to be more mature than high school students succumbing to peer pressure. But, to be honest, the pressure is still there and your friends may feel the need to challenge you to a shot or two or crack a few jokes about how you were more fun back when you drank. While you should probably find new friends if this is the case, there are ways to deal with these people without drinking. Simply drink lime and soda water or Red Bull in a glass and nobody will look at it twice. If you really want to commit, fill an empty beer bottle with water and keep that with you all night.

Find other social activities

Your social life most definitely does not have to revolve around places with a liquor license. There are so many awesome activities you can do without booze being involved. You could get outdoors and go for a hike or plan a day at an amusement park. You can go to the cinema or watch a play. There’s a whole world out there and you can explore it without touching a drop of alcohol.

Not drinking has some major benefits. For one, you don’t wake up feeling awful and ashamed after a big night out. You’re also a lot more responsible. For example, there’s no chance of you driving drunk or doing something equally stupid that ends up with you needing legal assistance.
