How to make the most of a South African holiday

How to make the most of a South African holiday

The time has come to book your ticket, pack your bags and head to South Africa on holiday. This country, especially Cape Town, offers an experience you won’t find elsewhere in the world. If you’re a nature lover, there are breathtaking hikes, game lodges and national parks for you to enjoy. And if you’d prefer to lounge around the beach, receive a spa treatment and visit a boutique hotel for high tea, South Africa has what you want as well.

That’s the thing about South Africa. It offers Blue Flag beaches, five-star restaurants and spectacular views that you won’t find elsewhere in the world. And that’s why it’s the perfect holiday destination. But you have to make the most of your trip if you want to fit in everything that’s worth seeing (and that’s a lot). So, here is how to do just that.

Choose your accommodation wisely

There are many choices when it comes to accommodation in South Africa. You can stay in a game reserve, in a luxury hotel, self-catering accommodation, a bed and breakfast… and the list goes on and on. However, choosing your hotel in South Africa shouldn’t be a decision that you take lightly. Instead, you should do more research than simply searching for the top hotels in South Africa. No, you should think about your needs first and then decide on where you’d like to stay.

Are you there to visit loved ones? If you’re in South Africa to meet up with friends or family, then choose accommodation which is close to them. They are the main reason you are in the country, after all. However, you can also choose to book a weekend near Umhlanga Rocks or Kruger National Park if you want to see the sights when you’re not catching up with your loved ones. They may want to join you because when you live in a country, you don’t always take the time to travel around and explore all the popular tourist attractions. It might be fun for them to be a tourist in their own country.

However, if you don’t know anyone in the country, then you need to look at accommodation options with specific criteria. Take the time to go through what each hotel offers and see what works best for you. Do you want to be near the nightlife or would you prefer to travel through the small towns and experience the natural beauty of the country?

Create an itinerary

If there are specific things you want to do while you are in South Africa, you’re going to need to draw up an itinerary so that you stay focused. You’ll find that there are many distractions waiting for you around each corner. You might be planning to visit the V&A Waterfront at noon and then go for dinner in Bree Street, but you may find that there is so much to do at the Waterfront that you forget your evening plans. And then you’ve missed your opportunity to visit the restaurant you’ve been looking forward to visiting. Having an itinerary will stop you from missing out on seeing anything you’ve been looking forward to experiencing.

However, your itinerary shouldn’t be too strict. You don’t want to have to leave an event you’re absolutely loving because your itinerary says you need to be somewhere that you could simply move out until the next day. Remember, you’re on holiday. Your itinerary is not a work-related to-do list, it’s a suggestion and a reminder of everything you want to experience while on holiday.

Take some time to breathe

This is a holiday and therefore should be relaxing for both you and your travelling partner (if you have one). That means that there needs to be an element of relaxation involved in your adventure. It’s that simple. You need to look at your surroundings and truly take it all in. And if you feel like staying in your hotel room and enjoying the luxury on offer, that’s good too. The purpose of a holiday is to refresh your mind and your body, as well as tick some items off your bucket list.

South Africa is the perfect holiday destination for a number of reasons. Reasons which you will soon find out when you board the plane and make your way to the bottom of Africa. Your accommodation is extremely important as it will make all the difference when it comes to whether or not you enjoy your stay. So, make sure the first thing you do when you plan your trip is find the right hotel accommodation for you.
